The redspokes Kyrgyzstan Shepherd’s Way cycling holiday is a rare opportunity to explore one of Central Asia’s most remote and mountainous landscapes. Beginning at Lake Issyk-Kul in the Tien Shan range, the route climbs high passes above 3,000 metres, follows winding gorges and crosses vast alpine meadows framed by snowy peaks and glacial rivers. With minimal traffic and mainly unsurfaced tracks, this is true off-road adventure riding.

Cycling through Jalpak Bel and Kara Keche passes, along Son Kul Lake and into the Suusamyr Valley, the journey combines physical challenge with deep cultural encounters. Staying close to nomadic traditions, riders experience authentic hospitality from shepherd families in summer yurts and explore landscapes that remain largely untouched by tourism. This is an expedition-style tour for adventurous cyclists seeking raw wilderness and genuine connection.

Bishkek

Kyrgyzstan’s leafy capital is the gateway to your cycling adventure, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Tian Shan mountains. Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards, Soviet-era monuments, green parks and lively markets, offering a fascinating introduction to the country before you head into the highlands.

Ala-Too Square forms the heart of the city, while the State Historical Museum and Frunze Museum offer insight into Kyrgyzstan’s Soviet past and national identity. For a more colourful taste of everyday life, Osh Bazaar is Bishkek at its most energetic, with stalls piled high with fresh produce, spices, breads, dried fruits, local snacks and Central Asian specialities.

Kochkor & the High Pastures

Kochkor is a welcoming mountain town known for its traditional felt-making, local handicrafts and strong nomadic culture. It is a natural gateway to Kyrgyzstan’s high pastures, where the riding begins to feel increasingly remote and the landscape opens out into wide valleys, rolling grasslands and big mountain skies.

From Kochkor, the route leads towards the Jalpak Bel Pass, passing shepherd settlements, grazing horses and sweeping views of the surrounding highlands. This is where the character of the journey truly unfolds: quiet roads, vast horizons and a deep sense of travelling through one of Central Asia’s great mountain landscapes.

Naryn & the Eki Naryn Valley

The ride through the Eki Naryn Valley towards Naryn is one of the most scenic mountain sections of the tour. Here, rivers cut through rugged valleys, pine-covered slopes rise above the road and the riding brings you deep into the heart of Kyrgyzstan’s highlands.

Naryn itself is an important regional centre surrounded by remote and spectacular terrain. This part of the journey captures the spirit of cycling in Kyrgyzstan: peaceful, challenging and wonderfully rewarding, with dramatic mountain scenery and a strong sense of open wilderness.

Son Kul Lake

Set high in the mountains at over 3,000m, Son Kul is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most unforgettable places. After Issyk-Kul, it is the country’s second largest lake and the largest freshwater lake in Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by rolling summer pastures and distant mountain ridges.

The area is a place of remote natural beauty, with wildflowers in spring and summer, grazing horses and yaks, and rich birdlife around the lakeshore. Local herders traditionally bring their livestock here during the warmer months, staying in yurts and making the most of the short highland summer.

A stay near Son Kul offers a special insight into Kyrgyz nomadic life, with open horizons, star-filled skies and the quiet beauty of one of Central Asia’s great alpine landscapes. The optional ride towards 33 Parrots Pass adds even more drama, with panoramic views across the lake and surrounding mountains.

Itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek Expand

Your redspokes Kyrgyzstan adventure begins in Bishkek, the laid-back capital nestled at the foot of the Tien Shan mountains. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Later in the morning, enjoy a relaxed city tour – a fascinating glimpse into Kyrgyzstan’s Soviet-era heritage and deep-rooted nomadic culture.

Highlights include Victory Square, Oak Park, the House of Parliament, Ala-Too Square, and more. We’ll also dive into the sensory overload of the colourful Asian Bazaar, where traders sell everything from fresh fruit to felt hats – a perfect intro to Kyrgyz life.

Day 2: Bishkek – Balykchy – Kochkor (with a stop at Burana Tower) Expand

With an early start, we leave Bishkek behind and drive to the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake, the second-largest alpine lake in the world and often referred to as the ‘pearl of Kyrgyzstan’. Framed by the snow-capped Tien Shan Mountains, the lake’s dazzling turquoise waters have been a place of legend, once considered sacred and untouchable. We will stop en route to visit Burana Tower, a historic minaret located near the town of Tokmok in the Chuy Valley of northern Kyrgyzstan, approx 80 kilometers east of Bishkek. It is one of the oldest architectural structures in Central Asia, dating back to the 11th century. Now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Tentative Site, with a small museum nearby displaying archaeological finds from the area.

After lunch, we begin our first ride of the tour, cycling along peaceful roads that pass by rivers, farmland, and remote hamlets. We ascend gently towards Orto-Tokay Reservoir, whose shimmering waters offer a stunning contrast to the rugged mountain backdrop. Our route finishes in the village of Kochkor, a centre for traditional Kyrgyz crafts.

Remote from civilization, Son Kul Lake is a real encounter with unspoiled nature. At the end of the day we arrive at our camp. Made from felt and wood and held together with wooden sticks and strips of leather, it takes just one hour to collapse or to erect a yurt.

Wake up on the high steppe and choose your perfect day:

Option A — Rest & nomad culture

Option B — Cycle the 33 Parrots Pass (out-and-back)
Pedal the legendary switchbacks of Terskey-Torpok (3,132 m / 10,276 ft). The road’s tight “parrot” curves deliver big views of the Inner Tien Shan and a good chance to spot raptors riding the thermals. Roll back to camp with tired legs and a very happy camera.

Staying Hydrated on Hot Rides – 6 Tips for Cyclists
As a cycling company, we know how important proper hydration is—especially when you’re out riding in hot conditions. Below are some general hydration tips that riders find helpful for staying fuelled and feeling strong on the bike.

Please note: We are not medical professionals and this information should not replace advice from a qualified healthcare provider. Each cyclist is different, so if you have specific health concerns or conditions, it is always best to consult your doctor and adhere to their advice.

1. Prioritize Gut Health

  • Why it matters: A healthy gut boosts absorption of water and nutrients.
  • How to do it: Feed your microbiome with probiotics (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut) and prebiotics (garlic, onions, bananas) to keep digestion and hydration strong.

2. Time Your Hydration

  • Why it matters: When you drink can matter as much as how much.
  • How to do it: Start the day with a big glass of water—add lemon or a pinch of sea salt for an extra boost.

3. Hydrate Beyond Water

  • Why it matters: Water isn’t the only way to stay hydrated.
  • How to do it: Include coconut water, bone broth, or other nutrient-rich drinks to hydrate and replace electrolytes—especially during long rides or after heavy sweating.

4. Don’t Forget the Minerals

  • Why it matters: Minerals like sodium, calcium, and magnesium help retain water.
  • How to do it: Eat mineral-rich foods such as salted nuts, seeds, and dairy—or take a quality mineral supplement if needed.

5. Absorb Water Better

  • Why it matters: Drinking water too fast can flush out nutrients and reduce absorption.
  • How to do it: Sip steadily throughout the day. Add a pinch of sea salt to your bottle and eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and pineapple.

6. Keep Your Electrolytes in Check

  • Why it matters: Electrolytes regulate fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions.
  • How to do it: Eat potassium- and magnesium-rich foods like bananas, avocados, and leafy greens. Add electrolyte tablets or sea salt to your water after intense sweat sessions.

  • Some seemingly idyllic spots may pose hidden risks, including strong currents or waterborne hazards.
  • Your guide will direct you to safe, recommended swimming areas.

Accommodation

This is one of redspokes’ most authentic expedition-style tours, with accommodation reflecting the nomadic culture and remote landscapes of Kyrgyzstan. Across the journey you will stay in a mix of city hotels, family-run guesthouses, yurt camps and tented wilderness camps as you travel deep into the Tien Shan Mountains.

Across the itinerary you will stay in:

  • 4 hotel nights – Bishkek ×2, Naryn ×1, plus one final night in a city hotel
  • 3–4 tented camping nights – remote high-mountain wilderness (Days 3–6)
  • 2 yurt camp nights – traditional shared yurts at Son-Kul (around 4 people per yurt)
  • 2 guesthouse / family-stay nights – Kochkor, Chaek
  • 1 homestay night – Kyzyl-Oi (simple, shared facilities)

Hotels in Bishkek and Naryn are modern 3–4★ properties offering private bathrooms and the chance to refresh before and after the remote stages. In the mountains, accommodation becomes progressively more traditional. Tented camps offer basic but well-supported nights under vast star-filled skies, while the yurt camp at Son-Kul provides the highlight of the tour — a true nomadic experience surrounded by high pastures and herding families. Guesthouses and homestays in Kochkor, Chaek and Kyzyl-Oi are simple but warm, offering local hospitality and hearty home-cooked meals.

Expect:

  • A genuine nomadic adventure with basic facilities
  • Traditional yurts, family guesthouses and multiple nights of camping
  • A small number of hotel nights in the cities
  • Accommodation chosen for cultural immersion and access to Kyrgyzstan’s most remote cycling terrain

This was my 4th tour with Redspokes and I think it was very well organized in general. Scenery in Kyrgyzstan was breathtakingly beautiful but cycling on 95% gravel was also super tough for me as I wasn't a natural born cyclist nor was I comfortable in this terrain at these altitudes.

My tour mates were great and the laughters often helped ease off the pain. All said, I was very glad to have done this. I don't think I would've seen so much if I weren't on two wheels in a country that isn't very accessible. I'll continue to tour with Redspokes as long as they provide these adventurous options.

An unforgettable experience. The Kyrgyzstan expedition with Red Spokes exceeded all expectations, from the breathtaking landscapes to the flawless logistics.

Our tour guide Ayman and support crew were world-class, striking the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. Every detail was handled with care, allowing us to fully immerse in the adventure. A true 5-star journey. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I’m more of a leisure rider and it was a stretch for me to sign up for Kyrgyzstan, but I really wanted to see the Tien Shan. High altitude, weather and road conditions really did make this a challenging and at times difficult trip, but you get rewarded with outstanding vistas and a sense of achievement. I'm glad I brought enough warm clothes and had even bought a warmer sleeping bag for this trip.

Our guide Ayman and the support team were outstanding. Among my favourite moments were exchanges with the friendly local people, for example this young boy who spontaneously led us in a dance at the campfire at Son Kul! I look forward to sifting through some 1,000 photos on cozy winter nights.

I enjoyed the Red Spokes Shepard's way tour. The scenery was varied and spectacular, the people of Kyrgyzstan were friendly and happy to see us. Our guide Ayman was friendly and enthusiastic, very helpful with translation and sharing his local knowledge. His support team provided wonderful breakfast and lunches and serviced the bikes each day with lots of water and snacks to aid our riding efforts. The hire bikes were the right bike for the tour in my opinion. My first time riding and sleeping at altitude, take it easy until you adjust and bring the right amount of warm and waterproof clothing layers for the varied conditions at that elevation.

Kyrgyzstan is an untouched natural nomadic paradise made up of stunning, wild and diverse landscapes! I would highly recommend traversing by bicycle throughout this incredibly beautiful countryside!

To top this trip off, the friendships formed with the funny, witty and smart local guides just made the trip all the better for me! So step out of your comfort zone for a challenging, yet memorable, cycling adventure to one of the fewer places left on earth unchanged!

I will have special memories of camping at Kurtka – the campsite was peaceful, open and the skies were beautiful. I enjoyed the camping as it was more 'in the wildnerness' than staying in hotels. I also enjoyed the particularly homestay at Kyzyl-Oi as the rooms were bright and it felt like we were staying with the locals rather than being detached from the environment and culture. I had a fantastic holiday. So many smiles and happy memories … a beautiful country that I got to travel through by bike – my happy place. Thank you.

I've done a number of redspokes trips and this one was another great trip. The trip was well organised. Lidia was a very good Leader who never tired of answering all our many questions. She gave us a great insight into the culture and customs of her country. The back up team did a great job and everything ran very smoothly.

The trip takes you off the beaten track into the wilds of the country with fabulous varied scenery. Son Kul Lake is an amazing spot where we witnessed Kyrgyz nomadic life. The sunsets and sunrises were awesome. The trip is mostly off road and rough in places so a good level of fitness is required. Kyrgystan is a fabulous country and certainly worth a visit.

Our trip to Kyrgyzstan was a real adventure. The cycling was tough and made more challenging by the heat, altitude and rough "washboard" rutted roads – however, the dramatic scenery, mountains and gorges plus the remote nature of the unpopulated areas we cycled through, were well worth all the effort. We were challenged by some huge climbs, the most memorable being the switch back climb up to the mountain pass before our yurt camp stay, but luckily we had a very supportive group who encouraged each other throughout. The downhills we had earned were enjoyed by everyone!

Throughout the trip we were treated to lots of traditional Kyrgys food and particularly enjoyed our riverside packed lunches mid ride. Soup is a staple and steamed dumplings are an ever present option! Cake stands full of fruit, sweets and biscuits provided welcome treats and bread and jam were always abundant. The accommodation was very varied and gave us an insight into the semi nomadic way of life still followed by some people. The experience of watching amazing sunsets while staying at Son Kol in a yurt will stay with us for many years!

This was my 6th trip with Red Spokes. I have loved all of them, but Kyrgyzstan was the most spectacular and varied and I loved the mostly off-road element (since I'm a mountain biker, not a road cyclist).

The cycling was very difficult at times – and I hated the washboard roads, horrendous! – but it was worth it to be exposed to such exceptional scenery and tucked away treasures. The group of 12 was very nice and everyone got along fine; a bonus. Looking forward to my upcoming trip later this year to N. Thailand.

Thanks from your happy client!

This is a tough ,mostly offroad tour for fit , committed and reasonably experienced cyclists. As such it is extremely rewarding. This mountainous country is amazing and very varied and it is keen to encourage visitors although many services and facilities are in their infancy – this adds a sense of adventure expected in Redspoke's tours.

The principle guide although young and inexperienced at cycle guiding specifically had an amazing attitude , was keen to learn ( from us) and solved all of the problems that came his way as they inevitably do. The rest of the support crew thankfully grew into their roles as the requirements of the tour become known. The food was regional , generally plentiful and delicious. They adjusted the menus on the hoof to accommodate our needs in the hot hot weather. The camping was enjoyable but the yurt camp was exceptional and very memorable. The rest of the accommodation was varied to suit what was available and always acceptable. I would recommend this tour for the adventurous.

'I have been on 4 group trips and this was the best by some way. Scenery was spectacular, varied and stunningly beautiful throughout the entire trip. There were no bus transfers apart from the start and end. Biking was excellent both in terms of the fitness challenges and technical challenges presented. Camp sites were in beautiful locations and camping was fun and comfortable for someone who is an occasional rather than regular camper.

The tour leader related well to all parties and successfully kept the stronger and weaker cyclists reasonably together without being unduly restrictive. The support team were great.'

This was our first organized bike tour – we usually organize our own bike trips – but we wanted to do something different and redspokes offered Kyrgyzstan!

The trip did not disappoint: the vistas were stunningly beautiful and the cycling was appropriately challenging, mostly due to very rough (i.e. unpaved) surfaces, which we were not accustomed to as road cyclists. We had so much fun with the off road parts as well as with the downhill portions. We loved the semi-nomadic culture and our time at Son-Kol lake and the yurt camp.

The local team was excellent. One caution is to be sure to take proper clothing for cold, wet weather at high altitude.

Daniyar and the support crew were great — not only did I love Kyrgyzstan, I loved the fact that they all did too. They dealt with the inevitable issues that arose smoothly, were always in good spirits (even on the days when we hit wind, rain, hail…and yeah, we had a couple of those), made great food, and were excellent guides into Kyrgyz language and culture.

If I ever toyed with the idea of getting into the support van, I knew that Daniyar would support that — but was really hoping we could just keep cycling. Another memorable redspokes trip.

Our redspokes trip to Kyrgyzstan exceeded our expectations. The pre-trip communication was efficient and helpful. The trip was well-organized and the itinerary exposed us to different landscapes and aspects of Kyrgyz life.

Our Kyrgyz crew were wonderful and helped us gain an insight into their intriguing and beautiful country. The cycling is challenging due to the roughness of the roads but the rewards far outweigh the difficulties – it is a truly stunning country that is only just starting to be discovered!

This is an excellent trip – The guide was probably one of the best I have ever had on any tour, nothing was too small or too much to be achieved. The quality of food and accommodation is very good, I was particularly impressed with the range of vegetarian food available. I loved staying with the local families and in the yurts. All the people involved were highly welcoming and hugely enhanced the enjoyment of the trip.

The riding is challenging, but not overly so – the scenery is spectacular and the route has been well-considered to offer sufficient challenges without being tortuous! The bikes available for rent are perfectly adequate for the job and the support is highly professional, competent and reassuring.

A fantastic adventure in an amazing country. The tour took us through a varied environment of the dry rocky lowlands to the lush green of the higher mountains. It was a step back in time as we encountered the hospitality and welcome of traditional nomadic people in their yurts and shared the open plains with wild horses. The locals seemed as interested in us as we were in them as tourism in this area is truly in its infancy. We exchanged a ride on their horses for a ride on our bikes and although maybe didn't enjoy the taste, we certainly appreciated the kind offer of fermented mare's milk.

With long periods away from any villages or shops it is great to have the support of the excellent redspokes staff and vehicles to carry all the food, water and camping equipment. I look forward to my next trip!
