Cambodia

Cambodia is a captivating country of ancient temples, rural landscapes, river life and warm Khmer hospitality. From the grandeur of Angkor to the quiet backroads of the countryside, cycling here offers an unforgettable insight into one of Southeast Asia’s most fascinating destinations.

redspokes offers two cycling holidays that explore Cambodia in different ways. Our Cambodia tour journeys from Phnom Penh to Kep, travelling via Kirirom National Park, also known as Happy Mountain. Along the way we ride through traditional countryside, passing coastal salt fields, small villages and the Kampot pepper plantations for which the region is famous. We also take a boat trip to Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, a peaceful tropical island with white-sand beaches and a relaxed local atmosphere.

Cambodia’s history and culture are never far from the route. Riders can experience the religious splendour of the Angkor temples, discover reminders of the country’s French colonial past, and gain an insight into everyday Khmer life in rural communities. The Cambodia tour also includes a boat trip on Tonle Sap, the Great Lake at the heart of the country, and a visit to the River of a Thousand Lingas, before ending in Siem Reap, gateway to the extraordinary Angkor Archaeological Park.

Our Cambodia to Vietnam tour begins among the ancient Khmer temples of Siem Reap and continues south through rural Cambodia before crossing into Vietnam and finishing in Ho Chi Minh City. This cross-border cycling journey links the temple landscapes of Angkor with the waterways and riverside communities of the Mekong Delta, ending in the energy and bustle of modern Saigon.

Both tours reveal Cambodia’s contrasts: sacred temples and lively markets, quiet villages and busy river towns, tropical islands and fertile plains. They also offer time to reflect on the region’s more recent and difficult history, including the legacy of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and, on the Cambodia to Vietnam tour, the Cu Chi tunnels and wartime history of southern Vietnam.

Unusually for a redspokes destination, Cambodia is not especially hilly, but the cycling is still varied and rewarding. Riders can expect a mix of quiet rural roads, riverside trails, village tracks and sections through rice fields, plantations and delta landscapes.

More Information about Cambodia

Cambodia is a country shaped by both extraordinary heritage and resilient spirit. From the grandeur of the Angkor Empire to the more recent chapters of its turbulent past, history is woven into everyday life. Visitors encounter vibrant Buddhist traditions, ornate temples, bustling markets and quiet rural villages where time appears to move at a gentler pace. The warmth and openness of the Khmer people leave a lasting impression, offering genuine insight into local customs, cuisine and community life.

Geographically, Cambodia is defined by its great waterways and fertile plains. The Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake sustain much of the country’s agriculture and fishing industries, creating landscapes of rice paddies, floating villages and riverside settlements. While the terrain is largely flat, the variety of road surfaces and rural tracks provides engaging and varied cycling, making Cambodia an accessible yet culturally rich destination for exploration by bike.
