Mongolia

redspokes Mongolia cycle tours offer you the opportunity to discover a unique nomadic society renowned for its rich historical origins and untamed natural environment. Enjoy hospitality in traditional Ger camps sleeping near to herding nomads and their livestock and see a way of life that has not changed for centuries. Formerly known as ‘Outer Mongolia’, the country is the second largest landlocked country in the world, bordered by China and Russia with a population of over 3 million, a third of whom are under the age of 18. Mongolia ‘the land of blue sky’ enjoys on average 266 days of sunshine each year.

Both redspokes Mongolia tours begin in Ulaanbaatar. Nomadic, Buddhist, Soviet and contemporary influences converge in this vibrant capital where ancient culture and 21st Century traditions forge a unique path.

On our 13-day Bulgan itinerary we take a dramatic train journey through a landscape of wide plains, nomadic herders and galloping horses to Erdenet in the northern province of Orkhon. We will cycle through a scenery of grasslands, mountains, woods and river valleys to reach foothills of the Khangai mountain range and ride on to Karakorum; Genghis Khan’s 13th Century Mongol Empire Capital city.

Our 15-day Gobi Desert to the Khangai Mountains tour covers wider and more remote terrain, with some vehicle transfers during the itinerary. We fly south from Ulaanbaatar to the heart of the Gobi. We will ride across the Gurvan Saikhan mountain range and wide-open plains to the Khongoriin Els ‘singing’ Sand Dunes. Our only encounters will be with nomadic herders and their livestock. We transfer to the Arts Bogd mountain and camp beside an extinct volcano before reaching the Khangai mountain range and ride on to Karakorum.

More Information about Mongolia

Mongolia is one of the last true frontiers for adventurous cyclists. With vast open steppe, rolling grasslands, high mountain ranges and desert landscapes stretching beyond the horizon, it offers an extraordinary sense of space and freedom. Traffic is almost non-existent outside the capital, meaning riders can cycle for hours through pristine wilderness, accompanied only by grazing livestock and the sound of the wind across the plains.

Cycling in Mongolia is as much about cultural immersion as physical challenge. The enduring nomadic lifestyle shapes daily life across the countryside, and encounters with herding families, horsemen and traditional ger communities add depth to every journey. Under immense blue skies and star-filled nights, Mongolia delivers a rare combination of remoteness, raw beauty and authentic human connection — an unforgettable destination for those seeking true adventure on two wheels.
